  • If I had to really take a guess here, this is what I'd speculate. This is only the first step for Visual Studio Mac. The next will be to begin bringing feature parity to the Mac version (My gut feeling is that VB.NET won't make the leap, but with Roslyn, maybe I'm wrong).
  • May 16, 2017  Hi Nicholas12, Thanks for posting here. As we known,.NET is pretty much Windows based. If you want to develop VB.net in Visual Studio for Mac Preview, you could potentially purchase say virtual PC for Mac, install Windows on it and develop on the virtual machine computer on your Mac.

The only two options I can see are git and subversion. I tried entering the url using the subversion option and it did ask me for credentials but the correct credentials never worked.

TFS can use either TFVC (Team Foundation Version Control) or Git for the source control part. You don't have to use an external Git server, it has an internal one - with the data stored in the TFS SQL database. You create your first repo when you create the Team Project, but you can add repos later and you can mix TFVC and Git repos in the same Team Project - since 2015.2 I think.

Microsoft is still in the denial and marketing speak phase but TFVC is basically dead, even Microsoft is using Git for all their new repos. I'm ready to bet Visual Studio Code and Visual Studio for Mac will never connect to TFVC.

Edit: I lost my bet for Visual Studio Code, it can connect to TFVC using the Visual Studio Team Services extension since version 1.116.0 (2017/04/12).

That’s right, a preview of Visual Studio for Mac will debut this month. This will be discussed at Connect(); 2016 on Wednesday, November 16, 2016. A lot of great features will be supported from the start. Including native iOS, Android and Mac development. Languages that will be supported so far are C# and F# support too.

The interesting part about this? Like Xamarin Studio, it’s based on the open source MonoDevelop IDE, which is actively developed by Microsoft.

IntelliSense and the .NET core will also be a part of Visual Studio for Mac. Though not all of the editor will have it’s functionality enabled by default. You’ll be able to tweak the settings in the Preferences dialog from the Mac menu.

If you’ve ever programmed in Visual Studio, MonoDevelop, or Xamarin Studio before, the IDE will have a very familiar feel to it. Any developer should be able to pick up the new Visual Studio for Mac and start making programs in their own environment. No matter which of these IDEs you’ve used, it will be a win for programmers on Mac.
